Bud Dwyer Suicide Video
Robert “Budd” Dwyer (November 21, 1939 – January 22, 1987) was an American politician who, on the morning of January 22, 1987, committed suicide by shooting himself in the mouth with a revolver during a televised press conference.[1]
On January 22, 1987, the day before his sentencing, Dwyer called a press conference to “provide an update on the situation”. Many expected Dwyer to announce his resignation from office.
Back in the eighties, there was a legendary politician who was the most awesome man that ever lived. His name was R. Budd Dwyer, and he was a fucking genius.
Our Hero arranged a press conference with as many people and news cameras as possible (as well as doing it on a day when school was closed so every child was tuned in). That day, he made a TL;DR speech to the press, handed some papers out to people, and then pulled a .357 Magnum out of an envelope and SHOT HIMSELF ON LIVE TELEVISION!!! FUCKING WIN!!!1!
Betamax videotape copies of the incident spread across 80′s America faster than the growing AIDS epidemic. The tapes were favorites among goths and other assholes, such as those douchebags who think laughing out loud at death scenes in the movie theater is hardcore.
Dwyer was convicted, but continued to maintain his innocence. If sentenced, he would have been removed from office and spend up to 55 years in prison. On January 22, 1987, the day before the sentencing, Dwyer called a press conference to “provide an update on the situation”. At the conference, a visibly agitated and nervous Dwyer stated that he would not resign his position as state treasurer.
All right… settle down. Don’t panic, please… don’t panic… don’t panic. Someone call… someone call the ambulance and a doctor and the police… don’t panic, please… show a little decorum, please… dear god in heaven…
Bud Dwyer Suicide Video
You’ve got your footage….now will you kindly wrap up your footage…get your cameras out..please get out of the room…..You’ve gotten all that can be gotten at this point….Paul please….Paul please (Speaking to photographer Paul Vathis who continued to photograph Budd Dwyer’s body)…please wrap up your cameras and get out of the room……Oh my god in heaven! (Looking down at the Dwyer’s body) Dear god in heaven!
Photographers continued to snap pictures of Dwyer’s dead body and at least one camera continued shooting
Now that’s enough! That’s enough! Please leave the room now!
Confused, feeling hopeless and about to lose everything he worked his entire life for, Pennsylvania State Treasurer R. Budd Dwyer, sadly took his life, on the cold snowy morning of January 22, 1987, in the middle of a televised news conference (At the state capitol in Harrisburg, PA, crowded with members of the press)
Suicide is a very very sad (and very final) choice to make. Although I deeply sympathize and can only image the horrible desperation Budd must have felt in the final moments of his life, I can not say he did the right thing.. In the end, it only overshadowed the injustice perpetrated on him, as well as intensify the agony felt by those who loved truly him.
